Pinewood Derby - Year One

Hunter participated in his first Boy Scout Pinewood Derby today.
He and Ron have been working on it together for the past couple of weeks. Hunter designed the car based on his own concept drawings:

The finished car, before the wheels are placed.

Dad is carefully adding the wheels

The finished car!

Derby Day - the cars are set. Hunter's is the one with the blue hood (second farthest from the front of the camera)

Waiting for the race to start

The final times. There were some tears, as Hunter came in last place. There was some wheel drag, so his car was the slowest. But...

He did get an award for BEST PAINT JOB!

It was tough to learn to lose. But he was happy in the end :)

The photo of anticipation "waiting for the race to start" was the best.... so, how did Ron's heart take it? He looked more involved and stressed than anyone....

I suggest that next year you teach him to build a car guaranteed to come in last as his private little joke, and then he can gain utmost satisfaction that it worked the way he wanted.

Also, you could have him build a "reverse car" which, when set on the track, looks like it was placed going in the wrong direction. . then you could use this year's car, repaint it, (Just paint on headlights on this year's tail end) and just set it on the track going backwards. . . .er, forwards.

Then next option is to have him use something like an orange or banana and put wheels on it. Very "green" and organic,an edible car. - -isn't that what scouting is all about? Put a toothpick in it to keep with the notion of "pinewood" derby.

P.S. Really cute pictures...
